Capabilities

Bathtubs

Any bathtub made of porcelain, steel, fiberglass or cultured marbled is a candidate as long as its original finish is sturdy and isn’t worn to it’s base.  It can be brought back to a clean crisp white or it’s original color.  The colors can also be changed should the tub be an undesirable color.

Ceramic Tile

Any tile that is made of ceramic can be resurfaced.  Reasons for resurfacing tile commonly involve changing the color to something more neutral.  It is generally a good idea to stay with lighter colors as the grout line will be sealed with the new enamel, thus making it the same color as well.  Most all tile is a candidate assuming it is in good shape and free of major cracks or chips.

Sinks

Many sinks are not candidates as they tend to get quite worn over the years and the original surface is not as sturdy as bathtubs or ceramic tile, thus bringing out it’s imperfections.  Sinks are also much easier and less expensive to replace and normally does not involve major renovation or high costs.  Most sinks that are candidates are generally antique pedestal sinks or oddly shaped sinks that sit in hard to replace countertops.

Countertops

Countertops made of ceramic tile or cultured marbled are generally the best candidates for refinishing.  Any countertop made of laminate, Corian, acrylic or other type of plastic are not.  As with ceramic tile walls, countertops should be in fairly good shape and free of major cracks or chips.  Cultured marble countertops should also be free of spider cracks and major pinholes in order to acquire the best results.

Non-Capabilities

Toilets

While many older toilets have style and characteristics that the newer models do not posses, unfortunately no toilet is a candidate for the resurfacing process.  This is because toilets constantly hold water and over time it will cause the bond to break.  The process of replacement is also much easier and less expensive than it would be to resurface and generally does not involve major renovation or high costs.

Floors

Ceramic tile floors can actually be resurfaced, the problem is the wear-and tear factor.  Bathroom floors take a lot of abuse from walking on them with shoes to dropping toiletry items on them.  This can quickly weaken the integrity in places and cause chipping or fading in a very short time.  The difference between this and wall tile is that wall tile is never used for anything but appearance.  The difference between floors and bathtubs are that bathtubs (if properly used) are stepped on with bare feet and used for bathing.  The only real exception are shower floors, as they only serve the same purpose that a bathtub does.  For this reason it is highly recommended that a bathroom floor is not resurfaced.
